(We Grow) Accustomed to the Dark - A Shisui/Itachi fanmix
For the newly-bloomed Shisui/Itachi community, [livejournal.com profile] bitter_nakano. Because FSTs are what I do when I want to write but have zero inspiration. Someday I will make covers that are not entirely hideous, but today is not that day.

SIDE A: .rar here
SIDE B: .rar here

Side A: Itachi

01} Wye Oak - For Prayer (3:50)
you thought you're better than you were
I wanted beast but I got bird
there's no room and there's no time
so you scratch yours and I'll scratch mine
cross your fingers, say a prayer
you don't believe but I don't care
you either win it or you don't
it happens now, or else it won't

02} Smashing Pumpkins - Daphne Descends (4:39)
you love him
you love him more than this
you love him and you cannot,
you can't resist
you love him
you love him for yourself

03} Placebo - Running Up That Hill (4:54)
you want to know, know that it doesn't hurt me?
you want to hear about the deal I'm making
you, you and me
and if I only could
make a deal with God
get him to swap our places
be running up that road
be running up that hill
be running up that building
if I only could

04} Kenna - Hell Bent (4:52)
am I the key
of fiction and heartache?
and the pain
is of no consequence
when I am hell bent
my walls are
closing in
controlling me, controlling me,
losing me, you're losing...

05} VNV Nation - Distant (Rubicon II) (3:15)
the paths that I once tread,
have all but gone.
only embers now smolder
where bridges once burned.
I feel alive,
and yet I fear what may happen now.
I know I can't return.
And I hear me say again:
oh let me not return.
damn the illusions of redemption and the hopes that held me here.
I will oppose all that would befall me.
with this the rage inside of me -
I will defy what I would become.

06} The Angels of Light - Star Chaser (5:50)
I follow you down
to your place of no pain
but your pleasures were shallow
and the scar still remains
I heard it's over
forgotten, and clean
but deep in this body
you're living in me

you live on in me
(star chaser, chaser)

07} Poe - Haunted (5:20)
and I'm haunted
by the lives that I have loved
and actions I have hated
I'm haunted
by the promises I've made
and others I have broken
I'm haunted
by the lives that wove the web
inside my haunted head

I'll always want you
I'll always need you
I'll always love you
and I will always miss you

08} Tom McRae - My Vampire Heart (4:03)
so let in the light
turn me to dust
if it don't end in bloodshed, dear,
it's probably not love
here we are
in the darkest place
to keep from forgetting
I picture your face
and I wonder
while we count the cost
which is sweeter
love or it's loss

09} Wye Oak - Civilian (live) (3:34)
I don't need another friend
when most of them I can barely keep up with them
perfectly able to hold my own hand
but I still can't kiss my own neck
I wanted to give you everything
but I still stand in awe of superficial things
I wanted to love you like my mother's mother's mother's did
civilian

10} Shearwater - This Confiscated House (2:59)
this is the film of my death
I am the only one left
let it all come down
I'm stumbling over the blocks in this confiscated house,
my associates
let this be my testament
carry the work we have done
carry the plans we have laid
I tried my best
but there's so little left...
someday the crows will couple in our ruins
someday the milkweed will bloom in profusion

Side B: Shisui

01} The Antlers - Kettering (5:06)
I wish that I had known in that first minute we met,
the unpayable debt that I owed you
I should have quit, but instead I took care of you
you made me sleep and uneven, and I didn't believe them
when they told me that there was no saving you.

02} OneRepublic - Prodigal (3:55)
and I take everything from you
but you'll take anything won't you?

03} Harvey Danger - What You Live By (5:44)
we could talk about the lives we’ve led
and count the reasons we’re not dead
or maybe we could talk instead
about the ways in which we are
always nothing or too much to say
only so many sides of the record to play
and the song that got stuck in my head
said you die by what you live by every time ...

04} Elbow - Red (5:11)
just as you are, perfect
just as you are
I'll give you the time you deserve
don't make those promises
don't tell me again
that dust is gonna settle your nerves
you burn too bright
you live too fast
this can't go on too long
you're a tragedy starting to happen

05} Florence & The Machine - I'm Not Calling You a Liar (3:05)
I'm not calling you a ghost,
just stop haunting me,
and I love you so much,
I'm gonna let you
kill me.

there's a ghost in my lungs
and it sighs in my sleep,
wraps itself around my tongue,
as it softly speaks
then it walks,
then it walks with my legs
to fall at your feet.

06} A Perfect Circle - Blue (Bird Shake Mix) (3:57)
close my eyes just to look at you
taken by the seamless vision
I close my eyes
ignore the smoke
ignore the smoke
ignore the smoke

07} Placebo - Blind (4:03)
if I could tear you from the ceiling
I know the best have tried
I'd fill your every breath with meaning
and find a place we both could hide
don't go and leave me
and please don't drive me blind
don't go and leave me
and please don't drive me blind
you don't believe me, but you do this every time
please don't drive me blind
I know we're broken

08} Eisley - Invasion (3:36)
you will take the breath from my throat,
and you would take the cherished people that I hold.
and they will try to make us forget ourselves,
one by one, one by one.
call me crazy but they are after us,
one by one, one by one.
you don't have to know the truth;
if you believe it, I believe it too.

09} Cake Bake Betty - Gigantomachy (3:12)
dark like the night, high like the noontime
bitter and begging my dear don't you go
your eyes were all wild your lips took to woo mine
you grabbed me and tugged at my soul through your own
i knew it was then we'd go down to the river
you'd cleanse what was left of me under the tide

10} Damian Rice - Cold Water (5:00)
cold
cold water
surrounds me now
(and all
I've got is your hand)

Bonus Tracks

01} Wye Oak - I Hope You Die (4:20)
I can't sleep until I see you sleeping
curse my mind and its all seeing eye
watch the rise and wonder if you're breathing
against your will
you are alive

02} Lovage - Archie & Veronica (5:06)
(jealous of the flies and the worms inside me)

03} Florence+The Machine - Rabbit Heart (Raise it Up) (3:52)
you made a deal and now it seems you have to offer up
but will it ever be enough
(raise it up, raise it up)
it´s not enough
(raise it up, raise it up)

this is a gift, it comes with a price
who is the lamb and who is the knife?

Notes: Yes, I am on a Wye Oak kick. You noticed? I got to see them with Shearwater earlier last month and was so blown away that I bought their whole discography between the shows. Their studio stuff is much less intense than the live, but it's good stuff. Civilian is kind of a quiet track anyway, and I blame this on the fact that I had to download the video of NPR's Tiny Desk Concert (watch the full performance here) and then rip the audio from it, as Civilian is a pretty new, unreleased-on-album track. It feels a little out of order, since I tried to arrange both sides to follow a proper time-progression from beginning to end of their relationship, but ... it works as a sort of emotional footnote, which I imagine Itachi has more of than he lets on. I Hope You Die is actually my tiny soundtrack for [livejournal.com profile] nthcoincident's Mada/Shi/Ita.

Actually, I think this particular mix is a little heavy on the indie, but for now I'm unrepentant. Also it's fucking huge. I've never done this long a FST before. :o Kettering is something I didn't realize I had, but listening to it I had this image of Shisui in Itachi's hospital room during war/sickness/whatever, or the two of them meeting there -- and that last line is a fucking gut punch, ow.

Star Chaser is one of those songs that I associated with Itachi and Shisui on the first listen, even before I understood all the lyrics. Also, Michael Gira's voice is so weirdly sedate and kind of perfect for the sort of dude Itachi is. My Vampire Heart? That's all for you, [livejournal.com profile] ronsard. >3 I haven't forgiven you for renewing my interest in this pairing, h0r.

This Confiscated House is something I tried to work into Itachi/Naruto in the way long-before, but I think it's much better here. It feels weird using old Shearwater, but both Missing Islands and False Sentinels both nearly made it on here, Shisui side. I had to cut more than a few tracks from it because it really overbalanced the other side, and that was bad juju. Other cuts include Wye Oak's Family Glue (i am family glue /
leaving a legacy of tell-me-to) because I realized yeah, that was quite enough, Iron & Wine's The Trapeze Swinger (And please, remember me / as in the dream / we had as rug-burned babies), Matthew Good's Weapon (here by my side, an angel / here by my side, the devil / never turn your back on me) and so on. BUT WHATEVER. I hope people found things worth listening to here, maybe some new artists to love!

Also, I'm rambling; no good. I blame this on the fact that it is 4 am and my brain knows I should be sleeping and is just shuffling out the rest of the crap in there before I get to the lie-down bit. SO. Good night all, and I promise I'll try to justify my existence in this comm with some writing, hopefully sooner than later.

Oh! I had no idea more than like ... 2 or 3 people read these things. xD Thank you so much! That's very kind of you.

I can't either. I've got ... flickers of emotions, but no actual scenes. Someday I'd like to do a story with things like plot and suspense and whatnot but ... well. :< Anything would be nice, at this point.

DOWNLOADED EVERYTHING BECAUSE YOU ARE A MUSICAL GENIUS AND WOULD NEVER STEER ME WRONG. I'll weed out the tracks I already have later :3

Running Up That Hill is *so* them omg. My 100+ replays in the span of a week can't be wrong. Also in a comment for the same fic I was writing, someone told me that I should have been listening to Poe's Haunted, and I was all, "JESUS YOU'RE RIGHT."

Funny story. I was listening to The Antlers' Epilogue the other day, and thinking, "Man, this song would go really well with some fic where Shisui manages to survive but then Itachi dies." Which is obviously the kind of thing only a jackass would write. On second thought, this story is not very funny.

Thanks a lot for dedicating to me the song that's used in countless Twilight FSTs. Slut ♥

Would more ItaNaru make it better?

NEVER INTENTIONALLY, NO. EVEN THOUGH THE LOVAGE IS QUESTIONABLE. (Which is to say [livejournal.com profile] nthcoincident said it should be there when I hesitated, and I'm weak to peer pressure. D:)

It so is, agreed! Sadly, I don't really care for the version I've got there -- I'd much prefer this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xH6AOaqVsGA) version, which I managed an mp3 rip of -- but it's kinda quiet and I'm not very impressed with it. :| It's so much more emotional and intense, and auuuuugh I love Brian Molko he and I agree on where vibrato should be almost 100%. (I just realized the other Placebo song from the above FST was also performed on the same taping on Henry Rollins's show, a version similarly ungodly in its ability to rip my heart wide open.) Ha! Poe is fabulous. I wanted to use Fly Away but I hate the random crap tacked on to the end of the track and didn't feel like cutting it.

...that is a cruel bitch thing to do. YOU SHOULD DO IT. I'm ... working on a variation with inspiration straight from Kettering, which I have been listening to on repeat for way too fucking long. Trying to work out just how much I can tweak Shisui's magical mindrape power before people just throw their hands and give up on me when I too-thoroughly abuse the reasonable suspension of disbelief line. :| I WANT IT TO HAPPEN, THOUGH.

I can say with a clean conscience that I have never once been subject to a Twilight FST, so I quite honestly had no idea. Also, it hurts my heart to hear of Tom abused in such a way. D: My second choice would have been Boy With The Bubblegun but that's too much speculation inferred and I was (mostly) trying to stay away from that. YOU KNOW ILU. ♥♥♥

More ItaNaru makes everything better, not gonna lie. Please say you haven't entirely forgotten them and have some great repository of Maific that you'll one day rain down on me, thus leaving me completely ready to die 100% happy.

Hush. My friends' tastes are above reproach. I said it, so it must be true <3

The same person (http://ronsard.livejournal.com/101955.html?thread=3440451#t3440451) also recommended Fly Away, so y'know, IT'S OBVIOUSLY MENT2BE. While we're on the subject of Placebo, I also think Drag is a good song for them, though depending on the day I can't seem to decide for certain whose PoV it's supposed to be. FSTs always reflect the creator's taste in music; while yours is a masterpiece collection of chilling indie numbers, any FST I make will probably be rife with folk-ish songs, so people will be all, "Wtf do these songs about mountains and forests have to do with Ita/Shi?"

Technically, a) I've already done it, and b) WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU? That's not the kind of behavior that should be encouraged, we should promote happy endings and the stuffing of fingers into ears re: canon events, la la la la. And obviously, you writing Shisui = DO WANT. In regard to his mind-control jutsu, what I'm mostly interested in is not so much what it can do (though I have tried to explore that), but how and why he developed it, and what the consequences of such a power might be. The latter ranges anywhere from nosebleeds and minor headaches to "o shit it's giving him a brain tumor and turning him insane' D: I think it's because I hate god-mod-type powers, so I always want to deconstruct them as much as possible.

They are, surprisingly, quite decent. A lot of icon-makers I like happen to be Twilight fans, to my... chagrin, and they post FSTs every now and then. The kids these days have commendable tastes in music, it's just that their choice of "literature" leaves much to be desired. (That's okay, I will just pretend that you did anyway. Asinine song names FTW. Oh, Tom...)

There is no repository as of yet, but later in the summer I'm thinking of writing a series of Itachi-centric fics where he's shipped with people other than Shisui. Candidates include Naruto, Hinata, Kisame... mostly this is so that I can update my head canon, since all the fics I wrote of these pairings were from before the reveal. Also because I'm starting to think I don't know how to write anything other than IS anymore orz

I'll buy that. :D

I applaud her taste; those are two of my absolute favorites, along with the stuff she sang for Rhys Fulber in Conjure One. Oh, that works nicely, absolutely -- and I totally get you on the perspective, damn. Invasion is like that for me on this FST -- it could easily have gone on either side, but I eventually decided on Shisui because of a few particulars. It's funny to hear that, because despite the breadth of my collection, when you stack it up percentage-wise I have very little indie, and a few bands that crowd out all others for attention -- namely Shearwater and Okkervil River, of which I'd probably stick one or two of their songs on there except OR goes on all of my FSTs and I wanted to spread out juuuuust a little bit. (I really wanted to put An Army of Lovers Cannot Fail (http://www.songmeanings.net/songs/view/3530822107858651287/) on here but it wasn't quite what I wanted at the mo', bawww.) I would love to hear take on a FST; I love those folkish numbers and I love it when the songs are more metaphorical than not so the trees and mountains and shit would be just perfect. :D BESIDES, I TRUST YOU.

A) Okay true, but do it again and B) No fuck that happy endings are for pussies. If these two were a happy ending pair I doubt I'd like them a tenth as much as I do. And I will do my best! Just trying to ... I don't know, gather the particulars and how to line it up, even though the plotless crap I write doesn't rely that much on things decent writing requires, ha ha. Oh god yes plz, the consequences are awesome, but I don't want to overdo it on the 'like fuck could he do that' thing. God-modey for idea purposes and all that noise. I'm not so big on them either, which is I think why I tend to angle for 'his power is what caused/exacerbated the bleedy lung death thing' rather than 'fuck, another badass who could only be brought down by TB'.

That's good to hear! If they were as bad as I hear the books/movies are, I would be obviously beset by woe for the abuse of likely good music winding up next to like ... Shania Twain and stuff. (I suppose I can live with that. Also ... yeah. Just about anything to do with vampires leads me to do an immediate '................', because I have read way too much shitty urban fantasy and also I hate Anne Rice almost as much as that fucking kid that wrote Eragon.)

Dammit, my hopes were high for a little while there. But that would be sexy wonderful, and now I have something to get me through this fucking season. Seriously, it's been shitty, but things are finally starting to look up. Also, Itachi/Hinata fills me with glee, because I love it when you do that. I know that feeling, though; I'm stone-cold stopped in the middle of this fun American Gods/Merlin crossover and I can't even write for Merlin because of the ninjacest love. WHAT HAVE YOU DONE TO ME. D:

I've never talked to you before, but hey, THIS IS AN AMAZING FST AND I THINK IT DESERVES SOME RECOGNITION. The lyrics already seem to capture Itachi and Shisui's relationship perfectly, and I can't wait until I actually get to listen to the songs (many of which are new :D). Thankyouthankyouthankyou. You are fantastic.

I've also been reading some of your fics recently, and they're so good. I just wanted to say this because even though I'd heard of Merlin before, I'd never actually considered diving into the fandom before reading your fics. And now I'm obsessed and have to wade through three seasons worth of episodes. So uh, I'd like to thank you for that as well. :P

I'VE SEEN YOU AROUND, AND THANK YOU! ♥ I'm glad you think so -- I spent a ridiculously small time agonizing over which songs belong on it (except for the few Shisui-centric cuts I had to make for length) and more on things like ... track order and who gets side a and whatnot. Without boasting, it's been rumored that I have, if not good, then a very varied taste in music, and there's usually something on my playlists to appeal to just about everyone. Hopefully you find something good, too!

And aaaaaaah, thank you again, that's super-sweet of you! :3 AND WELCOME TO THE PLAGUE. Merlin is a horrifically talented fandom, and I really want to write more for it or finish that American Gods crossover at least except Shisui and Itachi are kicking at my brain for the moment and it's kind of a mess in my head at the mo' anyway. But I love it intensely because it has, like, all my things-I-like-to-write-about kinks and the boys are beautiful and so obviously in love with each other and the show really is fabulous and I can't wait to see it when you start writing for it. BECAUSE YOU WILL, YOU HAVE NO CHOICE. On the bright side? Only two seasons -- we won't get three until September because the Beeb is a Giant Raging Asshole and loves watching us squirm, which really isn't a bright side at all because you will want season three.

Thank you again, because third time's a charm -- your comment here has totally made my night, and I will go to bed feeling warm and fuzzy now. :3

Ahahah, it's good that you know how to manage your time so well. But I suppose you're not required to ponder over the selected songs too much because you choose the most amazing ones right at the start. I listened to the soundtrack, and I love it. You spoil me. (I might have downloaded every other soundtrack you created as well, jsyk.)

Finish it! After you create more Itachi and Shisui brainchildren though. You must prioritize. ;) I was seriously flailing when you described why you love Merlin because I can relate. I'm holding off on the fanfic until I finish watching more episodes though because when I first skimmed through some stories, I didn't understand half of what was happening with the other characters. But that can wait. Right now, I'd like to know more about when I'd start writing. That would be a miracle and I would love to, but I'm incapable of having good diction and my brain likes to feed off of other people's ideas rather than creating its own. I've lectured it a few times but it's evil, I tell you.

Thanks for enlightening me about the seasons. I'm still relatively clueless about the show, but I've been catching up and omg, I squee over how adorable Merlin is and I will never deny that Arthur is a sexybeast. They are fabulous. Just watch. I'm going to finish the first two seasons in a month and pine for the next all summer and fall.

Oh god, time management and I have never been properly acquainted! This is just one of those times when everything fell in together pretty ... well, mostly properly. Originally it was 'the marriage of heaven and hell' and was going to have pre- and post-Shisui death tracks, but I got to reading Emily Dickinson and realized how lopsided the tracks would have been, and it worked out nicely as it did. I'm glad you like it so well! And I'm always happy to spoil, especially when it comes to music. (Hey, that's good juju -- I'll never complain. I hope you enjoy those, too!)

YES MA'AM. o7 Haha it was totally love at first sight -- and I totally understand. It's kind of a weird fandom; I mean, it's an AU of one of the most enduring legends of all time, and it totally blows off as much as it keeps and twists the rest and auuugh, having a little back-history on the original canon will help a bit but ... well. Besides, the last couple episodes of season two are freaking amazing and oh god, poor Merlin. ;A; And I totally feel you on feeding off others' ideas -- that's why I only have one or two aborted attempts at original fiction, and an entire library of fanfiction under my belt. I have more fun messing with other people's stuff than making my own, and I totally lost all shame in that somewhere down the line.

Haha, you're welcome! AND YES, YES they are. And yeah, then you'll join the rest of us in our pining; shit, I've been doing it since December. :

I am writing Itachi/Shisui and listening to this. This is the life :D

I listened to the Wye Oak ones first because I remember you mentioned that they held their own against Shearwater, which. What. But ngngn the singer's voice is so lovely--probably the reason I have trouble with a lot of indie music is because a lot of bands seem to think beautiful lyrics or instrumentals are acceptable substitutes for a bad singing voice or just a...lack of melody in general, and that wasn't the case here either. So melodic. I wish I'd listened to I Hope You Die when I wrote my Mada/Ita/Shi :(

Gigantomachy will always be my ItaHina song, from the moment you first linked it to me. For this reason, I didn't even MAKE THE CONNECTION with those lyrics (cleanse what was left of me under the tide). SO STUPID BUT AOJAOIFJ now it hits two OTP's, and that's always good!

So much awesome *_* I'm currently fixated on "Blue", which has such a compelling beginning and oajsgosf you are the master of the FST, honestly. I looped your MadaIta one when I was writing that MadaItaShi story, and this will probably have the same fate...

Funny, I am too! Well, about 1500 into the Shi/Ita I've been thinking about and I have had Kettering on loop for a few hours now which will tell you just how cheerful this will be --

Haha, well -- I love the studio stuff, but it's an entirely different energy from the live -- as tame as they sound on album, they can seriously rock the fuck out (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YlyqiJjcyUU) live. Such huge sound from two tiny people! (Watching Andy drum and keyboard is always a treat, no lie.) Aaaah, I love them. ♥ She does have a fantastic voice, and just a hint of the smoker/drinker rasp, despite not seeing her do either of these things, and I am almost as weak to that as I am to Epic Drums. I get you there; I'm kind of particular because I'm a singer who likes pretty words, so I don't really want to deal with either one of those things being mediocre -- if one of those three things has to be subpar, I'll take the instruments plz. There's a few exceptions, most notably Neutral Milk Hotel because Jeff Mangum's voice is kind of an ugly thing but it's perfect for the music. Not even Jonathan Meiburg could have sung Aeroplane Over the Sea with half the feeling. I wish you had, too, but I think it's okay because you can rectify that when you write another. :D

That's completely cool; it's also a Morgana/Merlin song for me, lol. Multi-functional songs are awesome like that. :D

Nnnnngh, I love the eMOTIVE remix album; there's some gorgeous remixes of The Outsider and The Hollow that make me way too happy to function properly. (I think I should have put The Hollow on my MadaIta mix, but now I think I'm saving it for Muku/Mada, you hor) I'm glad you feel that way! I feel pretty good about this particular mix, myself -- definitely my favorite of them so far. YESSSSS write moar, write moar!

...which is what I'm going to try to do before work. :D

I just realized that I have a song called 'Blue' two tracks behind a song called 'Red'. I completely missed that until right fucking now. :o
